Manchester United v Wigan Athletic: match preview

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez will assess defender Steve Gohouri and striker Hugo Rodallega before deciding on his squad to travel to Manchester United on Boxing Day.

Manchester United (Probable, 4-4-2): Lindegaard; Valencia, Smalling, Evans, Evra; Nani, Jones, Carrick, Giggs; Rooney, Hernandes.

Out: Young, Vidic, Anderson (all knee), Ferdinand (foot), Cleverly, Gibson (both ankle), Fletcher (bowel condition), Fabio (hamstring), Owen (thigh).

Young joins an extensive casualty list that is easing slightly with the recovery of Brazilian fullback Rafael from a hamstring injury but not as quickly as Ferguson would have hoped at this congested phase of the season.

Mark Ogden’s prediction: Manchester United 3 Wigan Athletic 0

.

Betting: Home 3-20, Away 11-1, Draw 5-1.

Match Notes

Despite Wigans desperate record against United, Roberto Martinezs team has started to hit their best form of the season so they will at least travel to Old Trafford with hope of ending their woeful run against the champions.

It is a welcome piece of good news for United, who have been ravaged by injury in recent weeks and who will be missing Ashley Young with a knee injury for an extended spell. Team News

Phil Jones has been given the all-clear to face Wigan after X-rays revealed the teenager did not suffer a broken cheekbone when he was caught by Clint Dempsey in the first-half of a 5-0 win at Fulham on Wednesday.

Stat of the game: Manchester United have played Wigan 12 times in the League and have won them all.

Rodallega picked up a heavy knock during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, but played against Liverpool in midweek and he will be checked again to ensure he is suffering no after-effects.

James McCarthy is also expected to be available despite also suffering a knock against Liverpool.

United, despite their growing list of injuries, rarely lose on Boxing Day and, given the way they took Fulham apart, Sir Alex Ferguson will be confident that his team are unlikely to slip up in this one.

Wigan (Probable, 4-4-2): Al Habsi; Stam, Caldwell, Alcaraz, Figueroa; Gomez, McCarthy, Diame, Jones; Moses, Sammon.

Out: Kirkland (back).

Test: Gohouri (illness), McCarthy (unspecified)

Wedding Invitation Trends for a Summer Wedding by Grace W. Chen

For example, you might choose a light blue and green paisley border with a touch of pink, and then pull that pink out into the center to host your wording.

Wedding Invitation Trends for a Summer Wedding

by: Grace W. Consider a bold, mustard yellow combined with a bright blue pinstripe on the outside with small blue and yellow flowers creating a border inside the wedding invitation. You could choose one set of pastel colors and have a patterned border with a pastel center containing your wording. Another popular pattern is damask or paisley, and using any of these color combinations will create an upbeat, joyous summer wedding invitation. You could choose a robins egg blue paper and shape it like a robins profile. Why should your wedding invitations stray from these feelings? Embrace the call of summer with these suggestions.

Bold and Beautiful Summer Wedding Invitations

Stripes are a rising trend, especially pinstripes and stripes with multiple thicknesses. You could also choose dark and light pink, dark pink and lime green, or light pink and a forest green for summer contrast. You could incorporate pastel blues, pinks, greens, and a touch of yellow to create a subtle rainbow effect signaling youve found your pot of gold.

Summer is often perceived as a more relaxed time of year with children out of school, people off on vacation, and commuters experiencing less traffic. Bright blue skies contrast with white clouds and the bright yellow of the sun, and vibrant green grass is set against bold pinks, reds, and yellows of natures floral palette when you look down. Color is everywhere and if you love bold, bright colors, then dont be afraid to use these in your wedding invitations.

Just because its summer, dont feel that you must use bold color combinations if it isnt your style. Pastels evoke romantic feelings, perfect for a wedding. You can still have fun with pastels and create more passive yet equally impressive summer wedding invitations. Summer weddings are often casual affairs as well and reflect all the beauty that makes summer so enjoyable: great weather and the beauty of nature in full bloom. Or, if your wedding will fall near the 4th of July, you could choose a flag shaped invitation and faded reds and blues to unite a pastel and patriotic theme. Of course, any attachment you choose should be a contrasting pastel color that will stand out from the wedding invitation, such as a light pink against a creamy vellum page.

Passive and Pastel Summer Invitations

Whether you choose boldly colored invitations or a pastel, whimsical design, your wedding invitations are sure to capture the magic of summer and create excitement at the prospect of your summer wedding.

.

Layered wedding invitations work especially well with pastels, and the vellum layer could be attached by a satin or chiffon ribbon, a flower, a pearl, or a wax seal containing your monogram. Although people tend to be more relaxed during the summer months, this doesnt mean they arent aware of the stunning colors that come with summer. Chen

If your wedding will be casual, consider a shape that will tie in with your summer theme

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has received the backing of two Barcelona legends who both believe he will be a success at Old Trafford despite an unconvincing first year in charge.

Xavi and Andres Iniesta both played under Van Gaal at the Nou Camp and lavished praise on their former boss.

The Spain internationals labelled United’s manager ‘fantastic’, ‘ahead of his time’, and a ‘special’ manager, after he gave both men their Barca debuts.

Barcelona legends Xavi (right) and Andres Iniesta (centre) have both come out in support of Louis van Gaal

The Barca pair were both given their first chance at the club by the Dutch manager when he was in charge

The Manchester United boss finished fourth last season at the club, and his methods have been criticised

‘They criticise him on a human level because he is very direct or because he seems arrogant,’ Xavi told Diario Sport in Doha, where he now plays for Al Sadd.

‘But you have to know him as a coach on a day-to-day basis. He’s mediocre.

‘He destroyed Barca and is destroying Man United. With what he has done to [Victor] Valdes he has shown he is a bad person.

‘Hopefully Pedro will listens and does not go there. He will do a great job.’

Van Gaal handed Xavi his debut back in 1998 and his positive comments were echoed by Iniesta, who the Dutch coach put in the first team when he was still just 17.

Xavi comes on for his Barcelona debut in 1998, an opportunity handed to him by Van Gaal

Iniesta said: ‘He has been a fundamental person in my career and a key coach in my development.

‘He gambled on me as a player when there were some really big name players in front of me and that’s why he will always be special to me.’

The Dutch coach has been on the wrong side of Spain internationals Victor Valdes, David de Gea and Ander Herrera recently.

He made Victor Valdes train with the United youngsters earlier this summer; he has consistently over-looked Herrera despite the former Athletic midfielder having the backing of most United fans; and he has had De Gea watching the start of the season from the stands.

The Dutch manager has over-looked Ander Herrera (left) at times, to the annoyance of many United fans

David de Gea (centre) has spent this season watching from the stands due to his desire to join Real Madrid

He also incurred the wrath of former Barcelona player Hristo Stoichkov recently when it seemed Manchester United might sign Pedro.

Stoichkov said: ‘I would never play for Van Gaal. He will make them very strong in the Premier League and in the Champions League. ‘I really wanted to play the game. Van Gaal will ruin him as a footballer.’

Former Barcelona forward Hristo Stoichkov, pictured in 1997, has blasted Van Gaal (right)

De Gea was due to face his boss on Wednesday before the afternoon training session as the pair look to repair the damage done by the keeper’s failed attempt to move to Real Madrid.

De Gea hinted that he is still not sure if he will be welcomed back into the first team for Saturday’s meeting with Liverpool when he said after his return to competitive action in Spain’s 1-0 win over Macedonia.

‘I felt good out there,’ he said. For me he is fantastic.

‘He was ahead of his time back then; he worked to perfect the training sessions and improve the team technically and tactically – 20 years ago he was a very complete coach.

‘In time he will do a very good job at Manchester United

A little more quality with the delivery and there’s a goal here – both sides are so open.

What is Olivier Giroud doing? John Obi Mikel is standing a yard away, then the striker appears to try and elbow him in the face! And then, oddly, almost stroke him.

Nigeria had 4 corners in each of its last two games, already 4 today.

30 minutes in, and Nigeria have yet another corner…

Mainer, I haven’t seen one yet, though I could be wrong.

Yet another corner for Nigeria – can they make one of them count?

Enyeama had the third-best save percentage among Ligue 1′s regular starting goalkeepers last season.

Mathieu Debuchy is finding plenty of space down the right and crosses for Benzema at the back post, but there’s too much on it. Lloris comes out and flaps at a high ball, but wins a free kick for nothing at all.

Matuidi once again gets in behind on the left and wins a corner – clever play.

Through 31 minutes, its quite even. Nigeria has 189 touches, France 171. Both teams completing about 75% of their passes.
